USD to Open Workouts
The University of San Diego opens its football training camp Sunday morning with 105 players expected to turn out. Of those, 58 are returning lettermen and 11 are starters--five on offense, six on defense--from last year’s 7-3 team.
Key players returning to Coach Brian Fogarty’s wing-T offense are senior quarterback Michael Bennett (54-for-100, 919 yards, nine touchdowns), senior fullback Scott Sporrer (876 yards, five touchdowns) and sophomore running back Michael Henry (269 yards, one touchdown).
Returners from a defense that allowed 118.4 rushing yards a game in 1991 are junior defensive back Matt Horeczko (77 tackles, seven deflected passes), junior linebacker Marcus Carter (60 tackles), senior safety Jeff Blazevich (50 tackles, three sacks) and senior lineman Christian Sirek (37 tackles, two sacks).
BOYS’ TENNIS
Taryn Burgk of Del Mar lost his quarterfinal match to Michael Jessup of Saratoga in the U.S. Tennis Assn. boys’ 16-and-under championships at Kalamazoo, Mich.
Burgk, seeded 11th, lost a second-set tiebreaker, 7-5, and was defeated by No. 7 Jessup, 7-5, 7-6.
