Flags rippled at half-staff in Clifford Allison’s hometown, Hueytown, Ala., but his brother continued to drive.

Less than 24 hours after his younger brother, Clifford, was killed at Michigan International Speedway, Davey Allison, still recovering from injuries received in a wreck at Pocono, Pa., last month, qualified third for Sunday’s Champion Spark Plug 400 at Michigan with a speed of 178.112 m.p.h, behind pole-sitter Alan Kulwicki (a track record 178.196) and Mark Martin (178.191).
