Bob Gagliano passed for 123 yards, including 83 yards on one scoring drive, and Marion Butts ran for 47 yards and a touchdown during the first half as the San Diego Chargers defeated the New England Patriots, 20-10, in an exhibition at Foxboro, Mass.

Gagliano was seven for 11, helping the Chargers open a 17-3 halftime lead. He was starting in place of John Friesz, who is sidelined for the season after being injured last week.

Scott Zolak, taking over for Hugh Millen during the second half, drove the Patriots 89 yards, including a nine-yard touchdown pass to Ben Coates, to bring New England within 17-10 with 6:41 to play. But Pat O’Hara, San Diego’s third quarterback, helped seal the victory with a 10-play, 70-yard drive, including a 32-yard pass to Tony Lenseigne with less than three minutes remaining. Carlos Huerta kicked a 22-yard field goal, his second of the game, with 1:57 to play.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed Jim McMahon to a one-year contract, giving the team six quarterbacks in training camp.

McMahon will join the team Monday. Despite arm problems last season, McMahon, 32, helped lead the Eagles to a 10-6 record after Randall Cunningham suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first game.

Quarterbacks David Archer and Jeff Kemp signed one-year contracts in July. Second-year man Brad Goebel, fourth-round pick Casey Weldon and free agent Peter Graham are also in camp.

The Dallas Cowboys and Houston Oilers will play for the second time in three weeks tonight, at Texas Stadium. Houston scored a 34-23 victory over Dallas two weeks ago in Tokyo.

Normally teams do not play twice during the preseason because they set their own schedules. The quirk this year developed when the league also picked Houston and Dallas to play in the American Bowl in Japan.

Complicating things for the teams is that they also had two training camp scrimmages and two practices together.

“I think we’re as tired of the Oilers as the Oilers are of the Cowboys,” Dallas Coach Jimmy Johnson said.

“Personally, I’m tired of the Cowboys,” Oiler quarterback Warren Moon said. “As much as you want to beat them, it gets harder and harder to get up for them.”

Green Bay Packer tackle Tony Mandarich, who suffered a concussion in the exhibition opener last week, has been put on medication for a thyroid problem and won’t play Sunday against the New York Jets. . . . The Pittsburgh Steelers, depleted at defensive back because of holdouts and a season-ending injury, signed former Michigan State free safety Todd Krumm. Krumm’s signing came a day after the Steelers lost free safety Gary Jones to a season-ending knee injury. The Steelers are practicing without two of their four starting defensive backs from 1991 as free safety Thomas Everett and strong safety Carnell Lake remain unsigned.
