PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Townsend Watches Trial

Share

Raider defensive lineman Greg Townsend, still absent as training camp enters its second month, is keeping one eye on the team’s activities in Oxnard.

But the other eye is on Minneapolis, where eight players are suing the NFL over its free-agency system.

“That is a big factor for us,” said Townsend’s agent, Neal Allen, “a major factor. Right now, he is obligated for four more years without a chance to experience any free agency.”

Allen would like to see a quick resolution of the Minneapolis case because “that would define some parameters for Greg and I.”

Townsend, 30, is in the second year of a five-year, $6.6-million contract that calls for him to receive $1.2 million this season.

Allen says he rejected that offer during his first tour of duty as Townsend’s agent. But Joshua Luchs, who briefly took over the job of representing Townsend, subsequently accepted the offer. Now, Luchs is out, and Allen is back in and asking for some type of readjustment.

Running back Marcus Allen and defensive lineman Chester McGlockton, both suffering from foot injuries, will sit out tonight’s exhibition against the Rams at Anaheim Stadium. Also sidelined is receiver Tim Brown, who is not ready to play after ending his holdout two days ago. . . . Chick Hearn will do the play-by-play for tonight’s game on Channel 9.
