Sherri Steinhauer shot her second 67 in three days Saturday to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the $700,000 LPGA du Maurier tournament at Winnipeg, Canada.

Steinhauer mastered winds gusting to 25 m.p.h. and had an eagle and four birdies on the 6,257-yard St. Charles Country Club course.

Her 54-hole total of 207, nine under par, left her one stroke ahead of Judy Dickinson, who also shot a 67 Saturday.

Tammie Green, the 1989 du Maurier winner, shot a 70 and was in third place, four strokes behind Steinhauer.

“I think it’s a challenge,” she said of the increasing winds. “It makes you think. You have to hit a lot of different kinds of shots. It’s fun to play in because you need an imagination.”

Steinhauer said things have been going her way, and that was apparent on No. 5, where she chipped in for an eagle, and on No. 12, where she chipped in for a birdie.

“It hit the middle of the stick and just dropped,” she said of her shot on the 12th. “When it’s your day it’s your day.”

George Archer shot a 68 to overtake faltering first-day leader Jack Kiefer and build a one-stroke lead over Jim Colbert after two rounds of the $700,000 Bruno’s senior golf tournament at Birmingham, Ala.

Archer’s four-under-par round left him at 10-under 134. Colbert, with the day’s best round, a 65, was at 135.

Kiefer, who shot a course-record 63 in taking a three-stroke advantage Friday, shot a 76 and was five shots behind Archer heading into the final round over the 6,992-yard Greystone Golf Club.

Mike Hill and Dick Goetz were at 136, Rockey Thompson at 137 and Gene Littler at 138.

“We ought to have a good shootout Sunday,” said Archer, who overcame two bogeys with six birdies.

“I never had a game plan in my life,” he said. “I hit the ball, find it and hit it again. Hopefully, I find it in the fairway.”

Vicki Goetze of Watkinsville, Ga., parred the final hole to defeat Annika Sorenstam of Sweden, 1 up, in the 36-hole final of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Kemper Lakes in Long Grove, Ill.

Goetze, 19, also won the tournament in 1989.
