Alcando, a 6-year-old mare trained by former jockey Bill Shoemaker, upset 1-5 favorite Dance Smartly in the $154,400 Arlington Budweiser Breeder’s Cup at Arlington on Saturday.

Explosive Kate, another longshot, finished second, 1 3/4 lengths behind Alcando and jockey Shane Sellers. Dance Smartly was three-quarters of a length farther back in third in the field of six fillies and mares.

The loss was only the fourth in 16 career starts for the Canadian-bred Dance Smartly. The daughter of Danzig, owned and bred by Ernie Samuel, was the champion 3-year-old filly in North America last year and was the first filly to win Canada’s Triple Crown.
