PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Dilweg Gets Message Across

Share

The Raider-Ram exhibition was barely under way, the setting sun glimmering over Anaheim Stadium Saturday night, when the plane flew into view.

Moments later, the message it trailed behind it also came clearly into view: “Mr. Davis, give me a chance--Dilweg.”

But what’s a fellow to do when his jersey sees more action than he does?

When Todd Marinovich’s jersey was deemed improper by an official in the Raiders’ exhibition opener against the San Francisco 49ers, he borrowed Anthony Dilweg’s jersey until his own could be fixed.

Dilweg, who spent two seasons with the Green Bay Packers, was signed as a free agent by the Raiders this spring after sitting out last season.

But Dilweg’s chances of sticking with the Raiders appear to hinge on his ability to beat out Vince Evans for the third spot. Barring injury, Marinovich and Jay Schroeder have a lock on the top two positions.

So, a desperate Dilweg went to the air. Did it work?

“We’ll see,” Dilweg said. “The coaches, at least, noticed it during the game.” He hasn’t heard from Al Davis, the team’s owner.

How much did the stunt cost? Said Dilweg: “Too much.”

Running backs Marcus Allen (foot) and Steve Smith (pinched nerve) resumed practicing.
