Owner Jack Kent Cooke of the Washington Redskins rejected a compromise proposal by Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard’s agent, Leigh Steinberg, Tuesday night.

It now appears the Redskins will break training camp Thursday with three holdouts--Howard, offensive lineman Jim Lachey and cornerback Darrell Green.

Steinberg told the Washington Post that he lowered his demand to the same $1.5-million-per-year figure that the Rams’ Gilbert, the third player drafted, received.

Tunch Ilkin, a two-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman, became the first of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ four holdout veterans to reach contract terms, one month after training camp opened.

Steelers still unsigned three weeks before the Sept. 6 season opener are defensive backs Thomas Everett and Carnell Lake, a former UCLA star, and wide receiver Louis Lipps.

Chicago Bear receiver Anthony Morgan suffered a sprained left knee during practice. Morgan, the team’s third-round pick a year ago, couldn’t stop his momentum and slipped on cement after finishing a long pass play.

Quarterback Jeff Hostetler of the New York Giants, who tested his injured elbow on Monday, was feeling discomfort. Team doctors had told Hostetler not to throw until there was no pain.

The Denver Broncos cut veteran quarterback Steve Pelluer, who signed as a Plan B free agent from the Kansas City Chiefs. The cut leaves Shawn Moore and rookie Tommy Maddox from UCLA as the only backups to John Elway still in camp.
