Second baseman Bret Boone of the Seattle Mariners made major league history Wednesday night at Baltimore when he became part of the first three-generation family to play in the big leagues.

Boone is the grandson of Ray Boone, who played in the majors from 1948-60, and son of Bob Boone, a major league catcher from 1972-90. Bret, 23, had one hit in four at-bats and scored two runs in the Mariners’ 10-8 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

“The third-generation thing has never been my focus at all,” Boone said. “It’s always been getting to the big leagues as quick as I can and learning as much as I could on the way.”

Boone was removed in the third inning of his game in Calgary on Tuesday night and told that he was headed for the majors. He called his father (a minor league manager in the Oakland Athletics’ system) and grandfather (a scout for the Boston Red Sox) to share the news.

Bob Boone talked about his son before he managed his Tacoma team at Tucson.

“I’m real excited he’s in the big leagues,” he said. “I always thought he’d make it. It was just a matter of time.”
