Emerson Fittipaldi, bidding for a second consecutive Indy Car victory, won the provisional pole during the first day of qualifying for Sunday’s Texaco-Havoline 200 at Road America.
Fittipaldi, fourth in the PPG Cup point standings, turned a fast lap of 132.948 m.p.h. on the four-mile, 11-turn track at Elkhart Lake, Wis.
Michael Andretti’s fastest lap Friday was 132.925 m.p.h., followed by Bobby Rahal at 132.437, Mario Andretti at 131.816 and Fittipaldi teammate Paul Tracy at 131.774.
