UC Irvine Women’s Soccer Player Is Hospitalized After Collapsing

Terrie Cate, an incoming freshman at UC Irvine, collapsed as a result of the heat during a women’s soccer workout Wednesday, according to UC Irvine sports information director Bob Olson.

Cate was believed to be in critical condition at Irvine Medical Center, but a hospital spokeswoman refused to release any information. Attempts to contact UC Irvine Coach Ray Smith were unsuccessful as well.

Cate, from Escondido San Pasqual High, was taking part in the Anteaters’ annual six-mile run on the first day of practice when she collapsed near the five-mile mark in the late afternoon.

Cate played three years of varsity soccer as a sweeper in high school and was a team captain as a junior and a senior. She had talked with Bill Bullock, her high school coach, about 10 days before coming to Irvine.

“She told me all about her college plans, trying out for the soccer team,” Bullock said. “She was a pretty excited young lady. . . . I’m sure she was up in front (during the run). She was always a 100% kid. She wanted to be up in the front of the pack. You never had to worry about Terrie not giving 100% effort.”
