SAN DIEGO : Dynamite Found in 3 Locations

Share

Forty-three sticks of dynamite were discovered at three different locations in San Diego on Sunday, sending the Police Department’s bomb disposal team into action and prompting warnings for people to be on the lookout for still more potentially deadly explosives.

The dynamite was believed to have been stolen from an East County construction site, police said.

The first discovery, of 32 sticks of dynamite, was made at 8 a.m. Sunday at Standley Junior High School in the 6200 block of Radcliffe Drive in San Diego’s University City neighborhood, Police Sgt. Steve McMillan said.

The dynamite, inside a clear plastic bag, was already deteriorating and even more volatile than normal, he said, because nitroglycerin was seeping from it.

Shortly after noon Sunday, another stick of dynamite was found in a back yard near Governor Drive and Stadium Street, and 10 more sticks were found near the same street corner in a paper bag, which also contained a detonation device, McMillan said.

All the dynamite sticks were of the same brand name, he said.

“If anyone finds anything that looks like dynamite, it’s important that they call police immediately and not handle or touch it,” McMillan said. “This stuff is pretty volatile, and could blow up because of a static shock.”
