PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Perfect Record Not a Big Deal to Knox

Share

Chuck Knox isn’t taking the Rams’ quest for a perfect exhibition season too seriously.

Sunday, a day after the Rams ran their exhibition record to 3-0 with Saturday night’s 16-13 victory over the Green Bay Packers, Knox said it doesn’t matter to him if the team goes undefeated.

“It would be really meaningful if they would count those,” Knox said with a smile. “You don’t get much for being champions of the Grapefruit League.”

In case anyone was wondering, the last time the Rams went undefeated in exhibition play was when they went 4-0 in 1979. That’s the year they lost to the Steelers in Super Bowl XIV, played at the Rose Bowl, the site of this season’s Super Bowl.

The Rams must trim their roster from the current 79 to 60 by Tuesday, and Knox said he probably would make at least some of the cuts today. One possible veteran who could be released early is 14-year veteran center Doug Smith, who is in a number’s squeeze at that position. . . . Tight end Jim Price suffered a strained knee in Saturday’s game, but Sunday Knox Sunday said Price appeared to be fine.
