From Staff and Wire Reports

The Orange County Coroner’s office did not release a cause of death for UC Irvine soccer player Terrie Cate after Sunday’s autopsy, instead ordering toxicology tests, with results not expected for several weeks.

Cate, 18, died Saturday, three days after collapsing during a six-mile training run at about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Bill King, a spokesman for the coroner’s office, said an official cause of death has not been determined. A drug screen has been ordered, and a pathologist also will perform microscopic studies of tissues.

Last week, an autopsy performed the day after the death of San Fernando High football player Sergio Echevarria confirmed that he died of heatstroke. Echevarria collapsed shortly before 2 p.m. last Tuesday after practicing for an hour in 102-degree weather.

Cate’s mother, Shirley Cate of Escondido, said doctors told the family they suspected heatstroke after Cate was transported to Irvine Medical Center with a 107-degree temperature and an elevated pulse. She collapsed at about the five-mile mark of the six-mile run.

Cate might have been taking medication for allergies and was slightly asthmatic, her mother said. In addition, teammates reportedly said that Cate had little to eat or drink Wednesday as she prepared for the run.
