SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Tiger Woods, the two-time national junior champion from Cypress, shot a six-over-par 78 in the first round of the 92nd U.S. Amateur Championship Tuesday at the Muirfield Village Golf Club. Woods was one under after 11 holes, but a quadruple bogey on No. 12 was the low point of a seven-over-par back nine.

Doug Hauenstein, a 31-year-old from Aurora, Ohio, led the first round with a 66 on the much easier, 6,779-yard The Country Club of Muirfield course.

Only three of the 32 below-par scores Tuesday in the 312-player field came at Muirfield Village. In addition, 17 of the day’s 20 highest scores were posted at the 7,006-yard course, site of the PGA Tour’s annual Memorial Tournament.

Woods, a 16-year-old Western High School junior, had birdies on the sixth and seventh holes, but soon found trouble on the par-3 12th.

He cleared the lake with his tee shot on the 150-yard hole, but the ball carried over the green. He chipped back across the green and into the lake. After taking a drop, he chipped on and three-putted.

Woods, who became the youngest person to play in a PGA Tour event when he played in the L.A. Open this spring, is the youngest player in the U.S. Amateur field. He declined to speak to the press after Tuesday’s round.

Nevada Las Vegas senior Warren Schutte, a former NCAA champion and reigning U.S. Public Links champion, shot a 68 at the Country Club. He said moving to the Muirfield Village course required a change in approach.

“Here if you hit it off-line, it’s in the trees. Over there if you miss the fairway, you’re just in thick rough,” Schutte said.

That should be good news for Woods, who will probably have to shoot a stroke or two below par today to make the cut to 64 players.

The first two rounds of the tournament are stroke-play qualifying rounds. The final rounds are match play. The 36-hole championship match is scheduled Sunday.

Chris Tidland of Placentia, a graduate of Valencia High, shot 75 in the opening round. Mark Sear of Newport Beach had 84. Defending champion Mitch Voges of Simi Valley shot 73.
