New York Met outfielder Howard Johnson underwent surgery on his left shoulder and both knees and will sit out the rest of the season.

It was the second time since 1987 Johnson has had surgery on the shoulder. His arm will be in a sling for about three weeks.

A piece of degenerated tendon, which was related to bursitis, was removed from his left knee. Arthroscopic surgery on the right knee repaired torn cartilage in the joint.

Johnson also has a hairline fracture of the right wrist.

The Atlanta Falcons will meet with the agent for two-sport star Deion Sanders today to continue working on an agreement that would allow him to play for the Atlanta Braves if they make the playoffs.

Jerry Reinsdorf, owner of the Chicago White Sox, said that he hadn’t made up his mind whether Fay Vincent should be forced out as commissioner, but said he believed he could be fired by the owners.

“Every lawyer that I have spoken to has concluded that a commissioner can be removed from office,” Reinsdorf said. “But let’s deal with that if we get to that point. We haven’t gotten to that point yet.”

Reinsdorf said he hoped Vincent would attend next week’s special meeting in Rosemont, Ill., near Chicago.

“I was very distressed by the fact of the commissioner’s unwillingness to talk,” Reinsdorf said. “I can’t imagine what harm ever comes from people getting together and talking.”
