California IN BRIEF : MAMMOTH LAKES : Area Closed by Fire Will Reopen Friday
Officials said the Mammoth Lakes Basin--a popular summer camping and fishing area--will reopen Friday after being closed because of a wildfire. The week-old Eastern Sierra timber blaze was 50% contained and firefighters expected to have the 8,375-acre fire fully surrounded by Friday night. About 1,400 firefighters, nine helicopters and six air tankers worked on the fire. No structures were lost or threatened. The fire began last week when wind fanned a log smoldering from a lightning strike about two weeks earlier.
