PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : 49ers Trade Haley; Young Is Starter

Charles Haley, a San Francisco linebacker who clashed with 49er management, was traded to the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday for a series of conditional draft picks.

No first-round picks were involved, according to Jerry Jones, Cowboys’ owner. But Carmen Policy, the 49ers’ president, said the trade could involve first-, second- and third-round picks in the 1993 and possibly 1994 drafts. The 49ers will have the option to swap draft positions in the first and third rounds of the 1993 draft and get the third-round pick in 1994 if they decide against the swap.

Haley, who had 63 sacks during six years with the 49ers, tied for the team lead with seven sacks last season.

Joe Montana ran six plays in a morning workout and threw 15 passes on the sidelines, testing his surgically repaired elbow for the first time in nearly a month. But with Montana’s return still questionable, Coach George Seifert named Steve Young as the 49ers’ starting quarterback and Steve Bono as first off the bench for the regular-season opener against the New York Giants.

“There’s no pain, but I only threw 15 yards,” Montana said. “I felt good though. So far, so good.”

Miami Dolphin receiver Mark Duper, apparently preoccupied with Hurricane Andrew’s damage in his hometown of Moreauville, La., was an unexcused absentee at practice. Because of Andrew, the Dolphins are discussing the possibility of moving their season Sept. 6 opener against New England from Miami to Foxboro, Mass.
