Mike Ilitch took over as owner of the Detroit Tigers and said his goals include signing Cecil Fielder to a long-term contract, retaining Manager Sparky Anderson and bringing back broadcaster Ernie Harwell. Ilitch, who completed his purchase of the Tigers from Thomas Mongahan, said he would take at least a year to study whether the team should rebuild Tiger Stadium or move to a new ballpark. He also said he hoped to bring back former general manager Bill Lajoie, who quit in January 1991.

Kansas City Royal right-handed pitcher Mark Gubicza has soreness in his shoulder and probably is finished for the season. Dr. Lewis Yocum examined Gubicza and said the soreness probably was caused by weakness in the rotator cuff. Gubicza (7-6) had surgery on the rotator cuff in August of 1990.
