LOCAL NOTES : Booth Leads PGA Juniors by Four Strokes

Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza shot a two-under-par 70 Thursday to take the lead after two rounds of the PGA Junior Championship at the PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Booth is at one-under 143, four shots ahead of Eunice Choi of Laguna Hills, who had a second-round 73.

Booth had four birdies on the front nine, which she played last, and is the only player, male or female, under par after two rounds.

Jeff Farley of Huntington Beach shot a second consecutive 70 to finish in a four-way tie for 11th place in the Northern Telecom American States Junior golf tournament at Brentwood, Tenn.

Farley finished with a seven-over 217, 11 shots behind Brett Boner of Birmingham, Ala.

Rick Brown of Laguna Hills had a 77 and a three-round total of 224, one shot ahead of Chris Berry of Yorba Linda, who finished at 73.

Quarterback Billy Blanton, who led Mater Dei High to last year’s Southern Section Division I championship, could emerge as San Diego State’s second-string quarterback.

“Billy made some gigantic strides (Thursday),” Coach Al Luginbill said after the Aztecs’ final intrasquad scrimmage.

Blanton, who missed Wednesday’s practices because of a sore arm, completed 10 of 19 passes for 84 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
