BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES

The Major League Baseball Players Assn. and baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent have settled the union’s grievance against Vincent as well as the charges of unfair labor practices that the union filed last month in connection with Vincent’s conduct during Steve Howe’s grievance hearing.

In the settlement, Vincent said he regrets possibly compromising the integrity of the grievance procedure and subsequent testimony. The admission puts an end to a situation that provided additional ammunition for club owners intent on removing Vincent from office.

Vincent had been charged with an abuse of power by owners opposed to him, attorneys for three Yankees officials and the players union after he had summoned New York Yankee General Manager Gene Michael, Manager Buck Showalter and vice president Jack Lawn to his office July 1 and admonished them for their testimony the previous day in Howe’s grievance hearing. The union had filed a grievance--which is still pending--about Vincent’s permanent ban of Howe for the Yankee pitcher’s involvement with cocaine.
