MISSION VIEJO : Safety Rodeo to Stress Bike-Handling Skills

Share

Children can brush up on their bicycle-riding skills today during a free safety rodeo at Montevideo Elementary School.

Safety experts at each of nine rodeo stations will demonstrate techniques such as stopping quickly, riding a straight line and maneuvering through obstacles, said Robert Blodgett, a public affairs coordinator for State Farm Insurance Cos.

The insurance company is presenting the rodeo from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

“The main intent is to show the kids some skills they can use in the real world to make them better bikers and, hopefully, reduce any more injuries or deaths that we see a lot,” Blodgett said.

Besides teaching riding tips, the rodeo will offer free bicycle inspections and the Sheriff’s Department will register bicycles to help in case they are stolen, Blodgett said.

The rodeo is open to any child between the ages of 6 and 12 who brings a bicycle. A local Kiwanis Club will provide free refreshments, he said.

Children who want to participate in the rodeo should bring helmets, Blodgett said. Extra helmets will be available for children to borrow in case they don’t have one, he said.

Montevideo Elementary is at 24071 Carrillo Drive in Mission Viejo.
