An Orange Glen offensive line that has become accustomed to protecting one of the San Diego Section’s most prominent passing attacks the past several years became multi-faceted in the Patriots’ season opener Friday night at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.

The line pass-blocked but also created holes for its running backs as Orange Glen edged Honolulu Punahou, 22-20.

Joe Prado gained 89 yards on nine carries and Shawn Cuffee ran for 60 yards on 12 carries. In addition, quarterback Brady Batten ran for touchdowns of five and one yard.

Batten also succeeded through the air, completing 11 of 16 passes for 166 yards.

All this behind an offensive line that averages 264 pounds: tackles Bob Williams (6-2, 285), Don Fluegge (6-2, 250), guards Jeff Johnson (6-0, 230), Brent Twedt (6-4, 295) and center Anthon Wilcox (5-11, 240).

Orange Glen’s Eric Herrera kept the game from ending as a tie by intercepting a pass on a two-point conversion attempt with 3:08 remaining.

Morse 22, Kamehameha 15--Conin Smith and Archie Amerson combined for 157 rushing yards to lead Morse. Smith gained 79 yards on 11 carries Amerson ran for 38 on 13 carries. Each also ran for a touchdown as did Ray Barnes.
