PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Hit on Elway Stirs Bronco Fans
There are two sure ways to inflame Denver Bronco fans:
--Play the Raiders.
--Lay a hand on quarterback John Elway.
So it’s not surprising that there was a near riot in the sideline seats at Mile High Stadium Sunday night when Raider linebacker Winston Moss, chasing Elway out of bounds, gave the Denver quarterback a shove in the back that sent him flying.
Fortunately, Elway was able to roll under the bench unharmed.
Raider Coach Art Shell said he thought Moss was merely trying to grab Elway’s jersey to prevent him from falling.
But Moss offered no such alibi.
“We’re not going to let up,” he said. “We’re going to be an aggressive defense. If any quarterback chooses to run the ball, we’re going to hit him.”
In losing Sunday, the Raiders turned the ball over five times. In winning their previous five meetings with the Broncos, the Raiders had a total of three turnovers. . . . Denver has the best opening-day record in the AFC: 20-12-1. The Raiders are next at 19-14.
