Share

The California Highway Patrol arrested 39 people over the Labor Day weekend in Ventura County on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to final holiday figures.

The number of people arrested was the same as last year’s holiday but far less than the 50 arrested on such offenses over the 1990 Labor Day weekend, the CHP said.

The 62 Labor Day weekend arrests in 1983 on charges of driving under the influence are the record, according to recent figures kept by the CHP. The record low Labor Day weekend figure was 35 in 1989.

“Hopefully, our education programs are starting to work,” said Staci Morse, a CHP spokeswoman.

There were no fatal traffic accidents over the Labor Day weekend, according to the Ventura County coroner’s office.

The figures for the Labor Day weekend are for the period from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday.
