The Maryland Terrapins got 501 yards on an Atlantic Coast Conference-record 105 snaps. They had 28 first downs, completed 32 passes and averaged five yards per rush.

Those numbers usually add up to a big victory. Not on Saturday, as Eddie Goines made a spectacular touchdown catch with 11:31 left to give No. 19 North Carolina State a 14-10 victory at College Park, Md.

“We gave up a lot of offense. Not a lot of points,” Wolfpack Coach Dick Sheridan said.

North Carolina State, 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the ACC, was held scoreless after its opening drive until Goines caught a 38-yard pass from Terry Jordan while falling backward near the back of the end zone.

Maryland (0-2, 0-2) twice moved deep into Wolfpack territory in the closing minutes, but safety Mike Reid intercepted a pass by John Kaleo with 1:35 left.

Kaleo completed 31 of 56 passes for 264 yards. But he had three passes intercepted and fumbled once. Running back Mark Mason rushed 28 times for 164 yards.

No. 24 Georgia Tech 37, Western Carolina 19--Shawn Jones passed for one touchdown and ran for two scores to lead the Yellow Jackets at Atlanta.

Scott Sisson kicked three field goals for Georgia Tech (2-0), which trailed 16-13 in the third quarter before interceptions by Lethon Flowers and Curley Day led to 10 points.

Lonnie Galloway of Western Carolina (0-2) completed 18 of 35 passes for 283 yards.

North Carolina 28, Furman 0--Natrone Means scored two touchdowns to lead the Tar Heels at Chapel Hill, N.C.

North Carolina quarterbacks had three passes intercepted and the Tar Heels (2-0) also lost a fumble in Furman territory.
