TENNIS ROUNDUP : Lendl Advances to Quarterfinals

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl moved into the quarterfinals of the Bordeaux Passing Shot tournament Thursday with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Alex Corretja of Spain at Bordeaux, France.

In the quarterfinals, Lendl will meet Cedric Pioline of France, who upset eighth-seeded Fabrice Santoro, also of France, 6-3, 6-2.

Fourth-seeded Sergi Bruguera outlasted fellow Spaniard Marcos Gorriz, 6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 6-0, and German Lopez of Spain defeated Andrei Chesnokov of Russia, 6-0, 6-2.

Top-seeded Thomas Muster of Austria defeated Juan Antonio Gisbert of Spain, 4-6, 7-6, (7-5) 7-6, (7-5), in the third round of the Cologne Open at Cologne, Gerany.

Muster trailed, 5-2, in the second set, before rallying to win on the clay courts of Rot-Weiss stadium.

In other third-round matches, Marcos Ondruska of South Africa beat David Prinosil of Germany, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Marcelo Filippini of Uruguay defeated Martin Strelba of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 6-2.

Second-seeded Sabine Hack of Germany moved into today’s quarterfinals of the $330,000 Clarins Open women’s tournament at Paris with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over wild-card entry Alexandra Fusai of France.

In other second-round matches, Federica Bonsignori of Italy upset eighth-seeded Mercedes Paz of Argentina, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, and Nadine Ercegovic of Croatia beat Catherine Mothes of France, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).
