The San Francisco 49ers’ defensive line bore the brunt of a new attack because of the team’s 34-31 defeat to Buffalo last Sunday, and the hits this time reportedly came from Coach George Seifert.

Seifert yelled and cursed at the lineman in a practice session outburst, blaming them for the loss, according to reports Friday in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat and Marin Independent Journal.

Seifert denied cursing the players during the Thursday session. “I said no such thing,” he said. “I just want them to play good.”

Said defensive end Larry Roberts: “We didn’t do as great, especially as a defensive line, as we all set out to do. But that is no reason for everybody to get down on us.

“Just like George out here (Thursday), jumping all down our throats--singling out the defensive line as the total blame for the loss of the game. I don’t think that was fair. I think it was bull. We worked hard and I think he knows that. I don’t understand his methods or what he’s trying to get accomplished by saying that we were the cause of the loss of the game.”

Chicago Bear Coach Mike Ditka dropped his threat to bench William Perry for Monday night’s game against the New York Giants after the defensive lineman dropped his weight under 320 pounds.

“He was significantly under 320 today, significantly. And, he was significantly over that weight on Wednesday,” Ditka said.

Asked how Perry’s weight could fluctuate so much in 48 hours, Ditka said: “I guess it’s water weight. I don’t know.”
