David Frost, who tied an opening-round record with a 62 on Thursday, did not come close to matching that Friday, but played well enough to extend his lead to three strokes after two rounds of the Hardee’s Golf Classic at Coal Valley, Ill.

Frost, of South Africa, shrugged off brisk, blustery winds and soggy turf to shoot a two-under-par 68 to go 10 under par for the tournament at 130.

“It was a good score, considering the wind,” said Frost, who had three birdies and one bogey.

Paul Azinger, playing in the same group with Frost, also shot a 68 to complete 36 holes at 133. Also at 133 are Loren Roberts, whose 66 was Friday’s best round, and Tom Lehman, who shot a 69.

Among those failing to make the cut of 140 were John Daly and 1991 Hardee’s runner-up Peter Jacobsen, both at 142. Daly, the 1991 PGA champion, had a 73 and Jacobsen a 72.

Walter Morgan shot a tournament-record, nine-under-par 63 to take a two-stroke lead in the first round of the GTE North Classic senior tournament at Indianapolis.

Despite intermittent rain showers, Morgan had seven birdies and an eagle over the tight 6,670-yard Broadmoor Country Club layout. Kermit Zarley was alone at 65, one shot ahead of Raymond Floyd, playing in his second senior event, and Dave Hill.

Morgan, who had never led a senior tour round, eclipsed the eight-under 64 shot by Larry Mowry in last year’s first round.

Floyd is bidding to become the first player to win a tournament in the same year on both the regular and senior tours.

Helen Alfredsson, vying for the LPGA tour’s rookie of the year, shot a four-under-par 68 for a share of the second-round lead in the $450,000 Safeco Classic at Kent, Wash.

The 27-year-old Swede took two weeks off to play in Europe, then planned to vacation for two weeks. She canceled her plans when Florence Descampe of Belgium moved within striking range in the rookie rankings.

Alfredsson rejoined the tour last week in Portland, Ore., and finished 10th for her sixth top-10 finish of the year.

Michelle McGann and Colleen Walker joined Alfredsson with five-under 139 totals on the 6,222-yard Meridian Valley course.

Eduardo Romero of Argentina shot a three-under 67 and held a one-stroke lead after the second round of the Lancome Trophy tournament at Saint Nom La Breteche, France.

Romero had a 36-hole score of 133, seven under par, over the 6,756-yard course.
