FAIRPLEX : Dominguez, Flores Hot in Stakes Races

Share

Trainer Caesar Dominguez and jockey David Flores continued to move up the ladder on the Fairplex Park stakes list Friday when Dominguez-trained Fire Two won the $35,000 Beau Brummel Stakes and Flores rode JetinwithKennedy to a wire-to-wire victory in the $35,000 Las Ninas Stakes.

Dominguez, who won five stakes last season at Fairplex, already has claimed two this meeting, and his seven overall moves him into the top 20 all-time at the Los Angeles County Fair.

Flores, meanwhile, also has won two of the first four stakes run during the 19-day Fairplex Park meeting and his 18 stakes wins moves him into fourth place in 54 seasons of racing at the fair.

Unlike JetinwithKennedy, Fire Two had to rally from slightly off the pace under Corey Nakatani. The well-backed second choice overhauled favored Instant Strike and Cabo Real to post a 1 1/2-lengths victory in 1:18 2/5 for the 6 1/2 furlongs.

The victory was the second in three starts for Fire Two and was worth $19,250.

JetinwithKennedy streaked through fractions of :21 and :44 2/5 and still had enough to hold off the moderate surge of In Regards to win by a length. The daughter of Kennedy Road was trained by A. Pico Perdomo and, like Fire Two, was the second choice in the wagering.

The win was worth $19,250.

Saturday at Fairplex Park, the features are the $50,000 Phil D. Shepherd Stakes at 1 1/16 miles and the $15,000-added First Down Dash Handicap at 350 yards. In addition to the 12 races on-track, Fairplex will offer wagering on the Woodward Stakes from Belmont Park between the fourth and fifth races. First post is 1 p.m.
