SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Just about everything a pet owner would want to know about animal health and pet regulations can be learned today at the Animals and Friends Pet Fair to be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at Plaza Park in Ventura.

Experts from the Ventura Humane Society and the Ventura County Animal Regulation Department will be on hand to explain the laws that apply to family pets.

Other groups planning to participate include the Humane Animal Rescue Team, Moorpark College Teaching Zoo Program, Animal Emancipation, International Guiding Eyes, Mutt Matches and the Pet Assistance Foundation.

The fair is being sponsored by Assemblyman Jack O’Connell (D-Carpinteria) to offer pet owners information about good nutrition and grooming, said Erin Needham, a field representative for O’Connell.

Needham said much of the information presented will address the problem of pet overpopulation, which she said results in the killing of 1 million unwanted puppies and kittens in the United States each month. “If people would spay or neuter their pets, it would cut down this terrible overpopulation drastically,” Needham said.

Plaza Park is located at Chestnut Street and Thompson Road.
