Fight Erupts at High School Game

A disturbance during a football game Friday night was sparked by gang members from one school who left the stands and ran out onto the playing field during the game, police reported Saturday.

When authorities attempted to clear the field during the contest between Corona del Mar High School and Estancia High School of Costa Mesa, students and others from both sides of the field filed out of the stands, said Sgt. Doug Parmentier. The teams were using Newport Harbor High’s field.

No one was injured and only one person was arrested. Police said the name of the arrested person was not immediately available. Police suspect that the gang members were from Estancia.

“Everyone ran down to see what was going on. There was a lot of shouting. We called for reinforcements,” Parmentier said.

When more uniformed officers arrived from Newport Beach and Costa Mesa the field was cleared and the game continued. According to police, there were four uniformed officers already at the game to provide security when the incident occurred. Another another six officers were sent as backup.

Corona del Mar beat Estancia 33 to 7.
