California IN BRIEF : OAKLAND : Stray Bullet Hits Boy, 11, in Head
An 11-year-old boy who was hit in the head by a stray bullet remained in very critical condition Saturday after five hours of surgery, officials said. The boy was sitting by a window inside his Oakland home Friday evening when people in two passing cars exchanged gunfire, police said. A single bullet pierced his head. “He remains very critical, and he’s in intensive care being monitored very closely,” said Sandra Hammer, nursing supervisor at Childrens Hospital in Oakland. She said it was unknown if the boy would suffer permanent brain damage. Police were searching for several suspects in the shooting, Oakland Police Officer Tom Cave said. They believe the shooting stemmed from a robbery at a carwash earlier in the day.
