Residents in the hills and canyons along the San Diego-Riverside county line south of Temecula were allowed back to their homes late Monday as the danger from a 1,650-acre fire passed, the California Department of Forestry said.

One ranch-style house was reported destroyed late Monday near Pala-Temecula Road, but firefighters saved at least 45 homes. There were no reported injuries to residents or firefighters on Monday, but six firefighters were injured Sunday when flames engulfed them as they fought the fire in thick brush.

Forestry Department spokeswoman Joanne Evans said that the fire was 40% contained late Monday and that complete containment was expected by 6 p.m. today. Control of the fire is not expected until Sunday, she said, although firefighters had 15% control late Monday night.

Fickle winds played havoc with firefighting efforts for much of Monday, causing the evacuation of residents in some areas and allowing others to return to their homes.
