Want a New Kitchen? Plan to Cook Up About $16,000

The average new kitchen costs $16,491 today, according to the National Kitchen and Bath Assn. in Hackettstown, N.J. That includes cabinets, countertops, appliances and labor.

“We don’t have a luxury category because we consider it a personal definition,” Donna Luzzo, communications director, says. However, the trade group has compiled some examples of high-end features and percentages of kitchens that have them:

--Custom-made cabinets, 50%.

--Planning center/desk, 37%.

--For use by more than one cook at a time, 30%.

--More than one sink, 20%.

--TV or stereo equipment, 16%.

--A $28,000-plus price tag, 14%.

--More than 400 square feet, 8%.

--Granite countertops, 5%.

--Marble countertops, 1%.
