It was nothing new to Keenan Walker and No. 23 Georgia Tech. It had happened many times before.

“That play, we’ve hit it every time against our scout team,” Walker said of the 54-yard pass play from Shawn Jones with one second to play that set up Georgia Tech’s 16-13 victory over No. 21 North Carolina State on Saturday. The completion led to Scott Sisson’s 29-yard field goal as time expired.

“I just looked up and saw the scoreboard clock and there was one second left and I looked at it a long time to make sure it wasn’t running out,” Jones said. “I looked at it, and it didn’t move and I knew we had a chance to win.”

“The ball was real high,” Walker said of the pass. “When I went back for it, I think they (the defenders) didn’t focus on the ball too well. I think they were more concerned about trying to break up the pass rather than intercept the pass.”

North Carolina State’s Steve Videtich missed four field-goal attempts, including a 51-yarder that fell short with 11 seconds remaining.

On the next play, Jones found Walker, who beat Mike Reid and Rickey Turner for the ball.

“That was just one of those plays,” N.C. State Coach Dick Sheridan said. “Shawn made a good play getting the ball off because we almost sacked him. In fact, we were touching him, I think, when he let the ball go.

“It was just a good play on their part. We could have stripped the ball out of Shawn’s hand and had someone run it in for the score. You never know what’s going to happen.”

Sisson’s winning kick was his third field goal of the game and the sixth last-minute winner of his career.

“In mid-stride, I see the ball is on the ground” after a low snap, Sisson said. But holder Bill Weaver “trapped it and got it up somehow.”

Sisson said he had about given up after Videtich’s kick fell short with 11 seconds to play.

“I felt the game was over, it was a tie,” Sisson said. “What are the chances of coming away with it?

“But somehow Keenan Walker comes up with a snag, and it’s more of a feeling, ‘Let me get out there and finish it off.’ ”

Georgia Tech, 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, got its only touchdown on Jones’ 16-yard pass to Jeff Papushak. The Wolfpack fell to 4-2, 2-2.
