Todd Wright kicked a 41-yard field goal with two seconds left Saturday to give Arkansas one of the biggest upsets of the season, a 25-24 victory over previously unbeaten No. 4 Tennessee.

Wright’s kick and Orlando Watters’ 71-yard punt return rallied the Razorbacks from an eight-point deficit with less than three minutes to play.

Arkansas receiver Tracy Caldwell made a key play in the final drive, a great catch of a high throw over the middle on third and 16 from the Razorback 42.

Wright’s fourth field goal was the winner, but it wouldn’t have mattered without Watters’ punt return.

“The flow of the game was the first time all year we’ve handled it from kick to kick like a good team does,” said Arkansas Coach Joe Kines, who got his most impressive victory since taking over the Hogs after the season’s first game.

“The last few weeks we’ve been subject to emotional football. Things go good, we play good; things go bad, we kind of head into a slump. But we didn’t do that today,” he said.

It was a major disappointment for Tennessee, which had hoped to head into next week’s showdown with Alabama unbeaten.

“In this conference you can’t look past anybody, and I don’t think our team looked past Arkansas,” Tennessee Coach Johnny Majors said. “We’re still tied for the lead in our division. Certainly all is not lost by one defeat.”

The Razorbacks, 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the Southeastern Conference, trailed, 24-16, when they forced the Volunteers (5-1, 3-1) to punt. Watters returned the kick 71 yards for a touchdown with 2:28 remaining. Quarterback Barry Lunney Jr. was sacked on a two-point conversion attempt and the Volunteers held a 24-22 lead.

The Razorbacks’ Darwin Ireland then recovered Wright’s on-side kick at the Arkansas 48 with 2:27 left.

Lunney, a freshman making his first start, drove the Razorbacks to the Volunteer 24 and Wright, after waiting through three timeouts, nailed the winning kick.

Lunney finished the day with 13 completions in 19 attempts, including a 50-yard touchdown to Ron Dickerson Jr. in the first half.

The Razorback comeback overcame an earlier Volunteer rally.

After Wright’s 46-yard field goal gave the Razorbacks a 16-7 lead midway through the third quarter, Tennessee drove 80 and 56 yards for touchdowns on two short runs by quarterback Heath Shuler. A 53-yard field goal by John Becksvoort made it 24-16 Tennessee with 10:28 to play.

Arkansas thoroughly outplayed Tennessee in the first half, even though the Volunteers gained 299 yards to 284 for Arkansas for the game.
