ORANGE LEAGUE FOOTBALL : Diaz Leads Anaheim Victory Over Savanna
Brian Diaz scored twice and Phil Covarrubias completed a touchdown pass to help Anaheim defeat Savanna, 27-10, in an Orange League game Thursday at Glover Stadium.
Diaz, who carried 26 times for 152 of Anaheim’s 264 rushing yards, scored on runs of five and four yards. The latter capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive that gave Anaheim (5-1, 1-0 in league) the lead, 16-10, with 6 minutes 50 seconds left in the third quarter.
With 9:44 left in the fourth quarter, Covarrubias threw a quick slant pass from the Anaheim nine-yard line to Gabriel Alcala, who found an opening and ran 91 yards for the score. Covarrubias’ point-after pass to Julio Herrera gave Anaheim the lead, 24-10. Covarrubias completed three of eight pass attempts for 118 yards.
Savanna (3-3, 0-1) returned the ensuing kick to its 15-yard line and reached the Anaheim 43 six plays later. But with 7:10 left in the game, Anaheim’s Guilian Buzila intercepted a Paul Waldrop pass at the Anaheim 47.
