VOLLEYBALL

Jim Coleman of Chula Vista, the USA National Center Director and a former U.S. Olympic team coach, is one of four people who will be inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame on Friday.

“This is something that I never expected, and I feel extremely honored to be included among the volleyball greats,” said Coleman, who is in his 28th year with the USA volleyball programs.

Coleman, 60, was the U.S. Olympic team coach in 1968 and was an assistant for the 1988 Olympic gold-medal winning men’s team. He also served three stints as the national team coach from 1965-70, 1978-80 and 1990.

Coleman has been a member of the international governing body (FIVB) rules commission since 1977. He also coached at Kansas, George Williams College and Washington State.

The other inductees include longtime volleyball supporter Merton Kennedy and players Jon Stanley and Ron Von Hagen. The Volleyball Hall of Fame is located in Holyoke, Mass.
