1 Library to Close; 5 to Cut Hours

One Westside branch of the Los Angeles County Library will close next month and five others will reduce their hours because of budget cuts.

The reductions at the county’s 92 branch libraries were made necessary when the library’s $71-million budget was trimmed by $10.2 million in September because of reduced state funding. The new library hours will start Nov. 2.

“We wanted to keep the library strong, so we had to take drastic measures,” said Sue Cowen, a spokeswoman for the County of Los Angeles Public Library.

In coming weeks, 12 of 92 branch libraries are expected to close, Cowen said. One of them is the Point Dume branch in Malibu, which will close Nov. 15. Its staff and resources will be transferred to the main Malibu branch in the Civic Center.

New hours will take effect at the following Westside branches: View Park, West Hollywood, Malibu, Point Dume, Culver City and Marina del Rey.

All branches will be closed Mondays, and all but West Hollywood will be closed on Sunday as well. The new hours:

* View Park, 3854 W. 54th St.: Tuesday and Wednesday, noon to 7 p.m.; Thursday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; closed on Friday.
