Rene Lachemann, third base coach for the Oakland Athletics the last six years, signed a three-year contract Friday to manage the expansion Florida Marlins.

Lachemann, 47, has been fired twice from managing jobs--by the Seattle Mariners in 1983 and the Milwaukee Brewers in 1984. He had a combined record of 207-274. He was a coach for the Boston Red for two years before joining the Athletics.

“I’ve been fortunate to be in five playoffs and four World Series,” he said. “I feel I’ve learned quite a few things.”

The Marlins waited until an off day in the World Series to confirm the deal with Lachemann. He took much less time to announce his first hiring--older brother Marcel as pitching coach. Marcel Lachemann resigned last month after 10 seasons with the Angels.

Marlin General Manager Dave Dombrowski said of Lachemann’s failures in Milwaukee and Seattle: “He was 36 when Seattle hired him. I think he’s learned from his managerial experiences, and I think it’s been beneficial for him to be a coach for the Red Sox and for Tony La Russa in Oakland.”

Said team President Carl Barger: “He’s a solid baseball guy who relates well to people, and he has the patience and the hunger it takes for an expansion team.”
