SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

In an error-filled game, Orange Lutheran defeated Calvary Chapel, 17-6, Saturday at Orange Lutheran.

The mistakes included: seven fumbles--four by Orange Lutheran--resulting in an Orange Lutheran field goal and Calvary Chapel’s only touchdown; an interception and a blocked punt, which the Lancers’ Mark Somers returned for a touchdown.

Orange Lutheran (6-1, 2-0 in league) scored first with 8 minutes 18 seconds left in the first quarter, going 62 yards in four plays. Dan Peters broke through with a 40-yard touchdown run.

A fourth-and-15 situation forced Calvary Chapel to punt on its next possession, but kicker Danny Sundquist fumbled the snap, picked it up and ran 10 yards. Orange Lutheran took over on the Eagle 30, and Todd Williamson kicked a 43-yard field goal.

Calvary Chapel recovered Williamson’s fumble at the start of the second half, and No. 3 quarterback Josh Walehwa marched the team 57 yards, connecting with Sabe Younger on a 10-yard touchdown pass.

Just into the fourth quarter, Calvary Chapel was again forced to punt, but Mike Madden blocked Sundquist’s attempt, and Somers scooped it up and ran seven yards for the touchdown.

“We were scared of this one,” Lancer Coach Tim Taube said. “(Williamson’s field goal), I sense, took the wind out of their sails for the rest of the first half. But our kids started to get a little lackadaisical at the start of the second half. Fortunately, they recovered.”

Orange Lutheran limited the Eagles to 81 total yards 28 rushing yards and 53 passing, in the second half.
