SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Stais Boseman says his ankle is completely healed now.

And how.

Thursday night at Inglewood’s Coleman Field, Boseman passed for five touchdowns and ran for 139 yards to lead Morningside High to a 35-27 Ocean League victory over visiting Redondo.

The senior quarterback, who sprained an ankle in the season opener, led the Monarchs (4-3, 3-0 in league play) to their third consecutive victory by passing for touchdowns of 11, 71, 33, 39 and four yards. He set up one touchdown with a 69-yard scramble.

“The ankle feels a lot better and I was able to play about 100%,” said Boseman, who announced this week that he will attend USC next year on a basketball scholarship.

“I did everything: made sharp cuts, took hits, finished off the run. This was the first time I was able to play near full strength.”

Morningside was called for 13 penalties, but they were not nearly as important as Redondo’s four fumbles. Redondo recovered one fumble for a touchdown and lost three others in a five-minute span before halftime.

But in losing its fourth consecutive game, Redondo (4-4, 0-3) received impressive performances from running backs Scott Moore (18 carries for 144 yards) and Bob Cracknell (19 carries, 113 yards).

“We fumbled six times last week (in a loss to Culver City), so those guys didn’t see the ball much,” Redondo Coach Chris Hyduke said. “But they were back tonight, as was the whole offense. We moved the ball, blocked good, made the tackles. We gave them a good game and had our opportunities to win.

“But number 9 (Boseman) beat us.”

Trailing, 27-21, Morningside tied the score, 27-27, on the final play of the third quarter when Boseman passed 39 yards to Dennis Savage for a touchdown. His four-yard scoring pass to Darnell Ned with 5 minutes 35 seconds remaining was the difference in the game. Boseman ran in for the two-point conversion.

Morningside led at halftime, 21-19, despite 10 penalties and a defense that gave up 152 rushing yards. Boseman helped keep the Monarchs ahead with three touchdown passes and a long run from scrimmage.

Redondo took the lead with an 11-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a nine-yard touchdown run by Moore.

Boseman scrambled 69 yards on the ensuing series and one play later passed 11 yards to Michael Chapman to tie the score.

Redondo answered with another 80-yard drive that Cracknell finished with a seven-yard run.

Forced out of the pocket on the next series, Boseman scrambled before passing to Savage for a 71-yard touchdown.

Ned set up the next score by recovering a fumble on the Redondo 33. The Monarchs went ahead, 21-13, on the next play as Boseman passed to Anthony Rudolph for a touchdown.

Redondo offensive lineman Mike Frias finished the first-half scoring when he recovered a fumble in the end zone.

Boseman, who completed seven of nine passes for 191 yards, said the two teams engaged in an abbreviated yet lively pregame tussle that was partly responsible for Morningside’s penalty troubles.

“Some tempers flared and it carried over to the field,” he said.
