Students Interested in Political Forum
“If Only They Could Vote” in the Times Valley Edition on Wednesday was of special interest to me, since I and 36 of my students from Holmes Middle School were present at Monroe High’s political forum.
The little picture in color on the front page showed a student from Gledhill Street Elementary School yawning. A larger version of this picture appeared in the Metro Section. I watched The Times photographer take a multitude of photographs and I feel that it was in poor taste for you to print this particular picture because it intimates a ho-hum, disinterested attitude--and this was certainly not the case. The audience was spirited and very much interested.
The reporter described how a 10-year-old who was not impressed with the answer that was given to his question “shuffled back to his seat on the gym’s hardwood floor.” As a witness to this scene, the student did not “shuffle.” He walked with a quick step because he felt good he had asked a meaningful question.
I feel that the reporter did not fully understand or appreciate the activity.
