THE WAY IT USED TO BE
South-Central L.A. isn’t the only place one can’t go home to. Last summer, visiting my old haunts in Waterbury, Conn., I was startled by the changes. The once-famous “brass capital of the world” is barely hanging on. Downtown, where my mother and I shopped with our hats and white gloves, is a pitiful ghost of the past. Its tree-lined “green,” with lovely paths that echoed with laughter, is now a hangout for the homeless.
You may not be able to go home, Wanda, but never stop trying.
