Times Staff and Wire Reports

Four brush fires burned near warehouses and a housing development at UC Santa Barbara on Monday, briefly closing a portion of U.S. 101.

Winds up to 20 m.p.h. drove flames through brush and eucalyptus trees as firefighters from several agencies and an air tanker battled for control, said Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Charlie Johnson.

The cause of the fires was unknown. The first blaze was reported at 1:45 p.m., Johnson said. The fires were still burning at nightfall.

One fire burned on Santa Barbara Airport property. An air tanker flew patterns over the fire to keep it from spreading, Johnson said.
