HUNTINGTON BEACH : New Restrooms to Open Downtown

Relief in the form of seven new restrooms is coming at long last to the besieged merchants and visitors in the downtown area.

The new unisex restrooms should be operating in the Main Promenade parking structure on Main Street by Dec. 1, officials said.

“They’ll be open for the Christmas season so that people can shop in comfort,” Community Services Director Ron Hagan said this week.

Business people and visitors have complained about the lack of restrooms since the start of redevelopment.

Nancy Wylie, a downtown businesswoman, said she and others have been forced to say no to tourists and shoppers wishing to use facilities at businesses because of the volume of requests.

City officials had installed two portable restrooms in the parking structure in an effort to alleviate the problem pending the construction of permanent facilities.

The new restrooms, featuring tile interiors and stainless steel fixtures, will cost about $85,030. The City Council this week agreed to a $1,500 expenditure to correct an error in plumbing design.
