BASEBALL

The Padres promoted Dave Trembley to manager of the Double-A Wichita Wranglers of the Texas League. Trembley, 41, had been manager of the Class-A Charleston Rainbows of the South Atlantic League for the past two seasons. The Padres have dropped their affiliation with Charleston. Trembley managed in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm system from 1986 through 1989 and was director of baseball operations at their spring training site in 1990. He was named minor league manager of the year by Baseball America in 1987 for leading the Harrisburg Senators to the Eastern League championship.

TENNIS

University of San Diego’s Mark Huarte, Tonatiuth Cuevas and Olle Pierrou advanced to the main draw of the Southern California Intercollegiate Tournament at UC Irvine with victories in the second round of qualifying. USD’s Darren Potkey and Tim Truebenbach were eliminated in the first round of qualifying.

VOLLEYBALL

Senior Laura Kranz’s 20 kills led UC San Diego to a 15-10, 15-8, 8-15, 13-15, 15-11 non-conference victory over Cal State San Bernardino. Elizabeth Banez added 12 kills for UCSD (10-17).

Cal Lutheran defeated host Christian Heritage, 15-11, 15-4, 15-11, in a nonconference match. Melanie Barringer led Christian Heritage (9-28) with seven kills.
