SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : La Verne Wins in a Big Way
With each team compiling more than 600 yards of offense, La Verne defeated Cal Lutheran, 55-37, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday at Thousand Oaks. The Leopards, 6-1-1 overall and 4-1 in the SCIAC, gained 651 yards, the Kingsmen 608.
In other games: Kurt Bruich caught two touchdown passes from Brian Harmon, and Chris Smith ran for two more as Redlands (7-1, 7-0) beat Whittier, 45-14, in an SCIAC game at Whittier. . . . Occidental led only 7-0 at halftime, but scored a 42-3 victory over Claremont in an SCIAC game at Occidental. . . . John Charles was 12 for 18 for 289 yards and three touchdowns to lead Portland State to a 35-10 victory over Cal State Northridge at Northridge. . . . Lloyd Pilcher scored three first-half touchdowns to lead Rocky Mountain to a 38-20 victory over Azusa Pacific at Azusa.
