Salud-Poll Fight Set for Tonight

San Diego junior featherweight Jesus Salud will fight North Hollywood’s Jesus Poll in the main event of a six-bout card tonight at the San Diego Sports Arena. Lightweight Frank Pena (13-0-1) of Aurora, Colo. and Sammy Miller of Las Vegas (9-2) begin the card at 6 p.m.

The Salud-Poll fight, scheduled for 10 rounds, should begin at about 7. Salud (42-5), who is ranked second by the World Boxing Council and seventh by the International Boxing Federation, is hoping to get a shot at Wilfredo Vazquez’s WBA title in early 1993. Poll (24-7-3) last fought against Jesse Leija on July 15. He lost a 10-round decision.

In other news, Top Rank and Arena Boxing announced they will bring six boxing shows to the Sports Arena in 1993. One of the shows being discussed would bring U.S. Olympic gold medalist Oscar De La Hoya on Feb. 7 in an eight-round fight on ABC-TV.

Abel Sanchez, Terry Norris’ trainer, said Norris’ WBC junior middleweight title fight with Simon Brown has been rescheduled for Jan. 15 in Mexico City. The fight, which has been postponed twice, will be televised on Showtime pay-per-view television.

BASEBALL

The Padre minor league players opened their trip to Taiwan with a 7-2 loss to the Taiwan Tigers. Billy Hall, J.D. Noland and Sean Drinkwater had two hits apiece for the Padres.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Point Loma Nazarene College came back from 9-1 and 5-0 deficits in games one and two to beat visiting Azusa Pacific, 16-14, 15-13, 15-5, in the first round of the NAIA District 3 playoffs.
